SLAM CAMP kick-starts its Summer Program with COVID-19 restrictions front and center!

On June 29, SLAM CAMP opened its 2020 summer season with an outdoor camp in Saint-Bruno, in collaboration with the Cougars' Basketball Program (Saint-Bruno's Basketball Association).  More than 40 hungry young athletes took part in the workouts defying the unpredictable weather: light rain on the first two days followed by a heat wave towards the end of the week.

On July 6, our weekly camp sessions moved indoors; a total of 40 boys and girls aged 5 to 15 were very excited to be back in the gym and worked hard on their handling, shooting, finishing and passing.

Several measures were put in place to help keep the campers and staff safe and healthy:

  • Screening protocol upon entering the building that includes answering a questionnaire (self-declaration form) + taking the temperature using an infrared thermometer.
  • Dividing campers in smaller groups throughout the day
  • Staffers to wear personal protective equipment: face masks or visors.
  • Imposing hand washing between activities and after breaks. Hand sanitizer is made available to all in the gym area and at the different entry and exit points.

Following the Camp sessions (9:00-4:00 PM) a professional cleaning crew comes in to sanitize the entire training area: gym floors are cleaned with an industrial floor scrubber while the protective wall padding, team benches, door handles and other highly used surfaces are hand wiped clean and sanitized.  Washrooms and the used classrooms are cleaned at a higher frequency throughout the day.

Our Summer Training Program group comes in every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 4:30 to 6:30 PM. A total of 30 young female athletes aged 14 to 16 take on the floor for individual and small group workouts. The Summer Training Program replaces our Summer Traveling Teams; it is composed of highly competitive young athletes who are serious about getting better while working on improving their basketball skills and conditioning in order to be at their best for their upcoming high school and club season.

Looking forward to the next 5 weeks of Hard Work and Fun! Our last day of indoor summer activities is Friday August 14.
